It's like a thousand years old! Unfortunately, Bush's Bureau of "Land Management" has handed the area over to companies looking for natural gas.

Nine Mile Canyon Coalition
According to Miller, "The only way to save 'Santa' and the world-renown rock art of Nine Mile Canyon from destruction is for people to get involved and make their voices heard to BLM and their elected officials across the country. This place needs to be saved for future generations."

Not So Good Forum Letter:
Forum Letter "I find it appalling that our nation's greed for oil will ruin one of these" historical sites ("Nine Mile destruction," Forum, March 21). At a local level, this means drilling for oil, gas and coal where they happen to be. In this case, Nine Mile Canyon. We now have the technology and the ability to do so while minimizing environmental impacts. Let's get started.

"Chris, there is no oil in Ninemile Canyon, they are drilling for natural gas. They estimate there is a 17 day supply for the USA at current consumption rates, hardly enough to make our nation energy independent."

Nine Mile Canyon has been nicknamed "the world's largest art gallery" because of its over 10,000 individual petroglyphs and pictographs made primarily by the Fremont and Ute Indian cultures.

Utah is home to some of the most important natural and historical sites, and I find it appalling that our nation's greed for oil will ruin one of these.

"But you know, the truth is that a sizeable percentage of Utahans can't get interested in this quaint stuff anyway, which they think is ancient graffiti. They also believe that they have the word of God translated into English from ancient American Indian writings - what an irony!"

Santa Claus Petroglyph... nearly 100 feet up on the side of a shear cliff. This canyon is called the "longest art gallery in the world" with over 10,000 incredible petroglyphs.
