November 4, 2008: Broken Heart Dolls

The collectible Broken Heart Dolls ($15.99) are soft, 7-inch plush hearts created especially for teens and tweens. There are five characters in the original series, each with its own personal back story of emotional torment.

Shown here are purple Chrissie (the party girl), tan-colored Aarrchie (the punk bass player), chartreuse Clyde (tragic poet and muscle car fan) and black/white Susiee (the goth girl). Not shown: Wolfgang, the pink wannabe pop star.

Additional characters are planned to be unveiled seasonally.

October 28, 2008: Mega Bloks Smart Builders Piano

The Smart Builders Piano, for ages 1 and up ($34.99), combines both music and blocks—both classic play patterns—into the first buildable electronic piano to inspire creativity as well as learning.

Without blocks, preschoolers can play the piano as a normal instrument, but by layering or removing blocks, young musicians can change the instruments and add different beats and melodies. Designed especially for small hands.

October 21, 2008: Publications International's Poingo
Publications International, publisher of electronics-enabled storybooks, recently debuted Poingo ($34.99), a dedicated reading aid for preschoolers and kids up to age 7.

The interactive reading system’s namesake stylus uses an infrared scanner to “read” microscopic symbols imprinted into each of the system’s storybooks. When scanned by the Poingo stylus, the symbols trigger not only the story’s words, but also music, sound effects or interactive games from anywhere on the page by way of Poingo’s built-in speaker.

The system launched this summer with six Disney-licensed books, two of which are included with the Poingo stylus. Publications International will launch five additional interactive books this holiday season. They are: Digital Text Messaging Book, Countdown to Bedtime Soundbook, Flashlight Adventure Soundbook and Video Play-a-Sound Book. Additional Disney-licensed books are planned for early 2009.
